Please join the Village of Alsip on Wednesday Oct 11, 2023 at 11am, as we acknowledge the Morton Arboretum, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, when the Village dedicates this Green Infrastructure to be then known as the Mary Schmidt Community Sanctuary located at 5500 W Plattner Dr, Alsip, IL (at the Alsip Boat Launch, aka Howe’s Landing)
Because of the outstanding efforts by the Morton Arboretum, the Village of Alsip was awarded a $260,000 grant from the US Dept. of Agriculture to feature a Green Infrastructure project that was designated to replace an MWRD parking lot at the Alsip Boat Launch on the Cal Sag Channel. This project entailed removing 2.76 acres of asphalt from the east parking lot to install native vegetation and some other vegetative green infrastructure features to improve interception of rainwater and reduce runoff and to provide an opportunity for education and outreach to the public and include local art that is reflective of Alsip’s history.
